UK: Lord Mayor Tina Black has cut the first sod to formally launch a two-year project to rebuild Belfast’s Yorkgate station, which is to be renamed York Street to better reflect its location.
The £10m project is being funded by the Department for Infrastructure and undertaken by contractor Graham.
The fully accessible new station building will include passenger and staff areas, retail space, waiting areas and toilets including a Changing Places facility. The two platforms will be wider than at present, with canopies and a footbridge
‘It’s going to make a major contribution to realising our Bolder Vision for Belfast - which is all about creating a greener, more people focused, more connected city centre where there’s much greater use of public transport and active travel options’, said the Lord Mayor.
The current Yorkgate station will remain operational during the works.
