BRAZIL: Test running has started on Route 3 of the VLT Carioca tram network in Rio de Janeiro, ahead of a public opening expected later this month.
Route 3 will serve 1·3 km of new alignment along Rua Visconde de Inhauma and Avenida Mal Floriano between the Candelária and Central do Brasil, with intermediate stops at Santa Rita, Camerino and Itamaraty. This is the final section of the network to be completed.
Route 3 services will run from Santos Dumont Airport to Centro do Brasil, sharing the existing tracks with Route 1 before diverging onto the new branch to reach Central do Brasil. Services will operate every 7 min, giving a 3½ min headway on the shared section.
