INDIA: BEML Ltd has won a Rs3·18bn contract to supply 10 four-car trains for the Jaipur Metro, and anticipates a follow-on order worth Rs600m.
Construction of Jaipur Metro Rail Corp’s 9·2 km east-west line from Mansarovar to Chandpole is being managed by Delhi Metro Rail Corp. A 23·5 km north-south line is proposed between Sitapura and Ambabari, along with a 2·3 km extension of the east-west line to Badi Chaupur. Tendering is underway for a concessionaire which would be responsible for operations and maintenance of the network.
BEML is a military, mining and rail manufacturing business owned by the Ministry of Defence. It has previously won orders to supply ‘indigenously designed, developed and supplied’ metro cars to Delhi and Bangalore. Announcing the Jaipur contract on December 19, the company said it is in the process of designing and developing ‘affordable’ metro cars suitable for India’s second-tier cities.
