Book review

By Stuart Cole

PROFESSOR Cole sets out to introduce readers to economic theory through the practical application of concepts within the transport sector. He looks at commercial transport operations, the development of public policies on investment, integration and competition, and the role of transport in the wider economy.

He adopts an example-led approach to introducing the subject, beginning with practical managerial issues and then deriving principles and theoretical concepts. Market demand and various types of elasticity are discussed, with a review of pricing in the rail, bus and air sectors. Demand forecasting and economic appraisal methods are explored using examples from Britain, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.

Chapter 11 looks at public-private partnership investment, with London's Crossrail proposals and Manchester Metrolink examined. Approaches to integrated transport, regulation and competition are covered in Chapters 12 and 13.

This third edition has been revised with additional information on southeast Asia and eastern Europe within its 448 pages.
