CHINA: CSR Ziyang Locomotive has completed a two-year programme of testing a battery-diesel hybrid locomotive, saying the 'advanced, innovative' design for shunting and industrial applications could cut fuel use by 45% and emissions by 60% when compared to traditional diesel locomotives.
The six-axle locomotive was developed by CSR Ziyang, CSR Zhuzhou and CSR Chengdu. The traction motors can be fed from the diesel engine, battery or a combination of both. The locomotive features AC transmission and a modular design which is intended to simplify manufacturing, assembly and maintenance.
