SRI LANKA: The cabinet has approved the Ministry of Transport’s proposal to seek an investor to solve its shortage of coaches by manufacturing them locally.
Involving the private sector in the production of an initial 100 coaches is seen as a solution to meeting a short-term need for at least 700 coaches, and 800 within the next five years.
Around 30% of the national fleet is more than 30 years old and 60% is between 25 to 30 years old, with only 10% of coaches being less than 12 years old. Orders have also been placed for 160 coaches to be supplied from India.
