UK: The University of Birmingham and multi-modal freight company Pass Logistics have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore ways of switching containerised goods from road to rail to support decarbonisation.
Researchers at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education’s Centre of Excellence in Rail Decarbonisation are to collaborate with Pass Logistics to devise ways to help companies understand their carbon output, and the relative impacts and costs of alternatives.
‘Making progress in decarbonising transport means working closely with our partners in industry to develop approaches that can be implemented in a straightforward, financially viable way’, said BCRRE director Professor Clive Roberts on July 27. ’Pass Logistics already has great insight into the challenges facing the road haulage industry.’
Pass Logistics estimates that a full train could replace 80 lorries and bring a 75% reduction in carbon emissions.
