UK: Network Rail has awarded Costain the £150m Crossrail North East Spur Contract, covering the upgrade of existing railway infrastructure between Stratford and Shenfield as part of London's Crossrail project.
The track and the 25 kV 50 Hz overhead electrification is to be upgraded under the contract announced on March 10, and extra stabling and turnback facilities provided. Costain will design and build major upgrades at Romford and Ilford stations, as well as improvements Forest Gate, Goodmayes, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Chadwell Heath and Brentwood stations. These will include platform extensions and lifts to provide step-free access.
Detailed design is to begin shortly, with the main works to be undertaken from late 2014 to 2017.
