The 950 mm gauge former Northern Ethiopia Share Company Railway (linking Massawa and Agordat, 306 km, first section opened 1888), was closed in 1975 and destroyed in the subsequent war. The main section between the port of Massawa and the capital Asmara was rebuilt and reopened throughout in 2002.
