The main (Northern) network of the state railway Réseau National des Chemins de Fer Malagasy (first line opened 1903) is operated on a 25-year concession by Vecturis subsidiary Madarail. The isolated line linking Fianarantsoa with the east coast port of Manakara is operated separately as the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est Railway.
