The line from Nouadhibou to Tazadit was opened in 1963 to haul iron ore for export, and was privately-owned by Miferma. Following nationalisation in 1974, the railway is now operated by Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière de Mauritanie, the state-owned industrial group.
