Created on 1 October 1994, the railway comprises part of the former Soviet Railways Central Asian network. A line from Uzbekistan reaches the capital, Dushanbe, while the Uzbek main line from Samarkand to Andizhan passes through the northern part of the country. TDJ carries more than 90% of international traffic.
