GERMANY: The first CAF Urbos 100 tram for Freiburg was delivered on the night of March 16-17.

Freiburg public transport operator VAG signed a contract with CAF in March 2013 for 12 seven-section 100% low-floor trams for its metre-gauge network. The contract value does not exceed €40m, although the exact amount has not been disclosed.

Six trams are to be delivered in the coming weeks, with the remainder to come in the second quarter of 2017. The first batch are expected to enter regular passenger service in mid-2015.

The bidirectional trams are 42 m long and have an empty weight of 53 tonnes. Three driven bogies provide a power output of 720 kW, with one non-driven bogie per tram.

The vehicles feature five 1·3 m wide double doors and one single door per side, and have a capacity of 241 passengers, with 66 seats plus six tip-up seats in two multifunctional areas.

The trams are the first in the city to feature a driver intercom in the passenger compartment. Other features include air-conditioning, two ticket vending machines per tram, multifunction passenger information screens, CCTV, tinted windows and stainless steel handrails. Two strips of LED lighting are be fitted with sensors to adjust the light levels according to external conditions.
