BELGIUM: A groundbreaking ceremony on August 25 marked the start of construction of a new Zwankendamme marshalling yard to serve the Port of Zeebrugge. The yard will increase freight capacity, and also reduce the number of shunting movements required.
The yard will be located on a greenfield site to the south of the existing yard. The first stage of construction involves moving the existing double-track railway towards the N31 road to create space for the extra sidings. The yard will be shielded by a 9 m high embankment forming a recreational space, as well as a buffer zone with high trees and noise barriers in Zwankendamme and Lissewege.
Guests at the groundbreaking included federal Minister for Mobility Jacqueline Galant and her Flemish counterpart Ben Weyts. ‘Every container that goes by train is not in front of us on the roads’, said Weyts.
