CHINA: MTR Corp has awarded Thales a HK$642·5m contract to install communications-based train control on the first phase of the Shatin – Central Link.
‘Extending and upgrading a heavily-used network without impacting on our customer service is a challenging task. We look forward to having Thales’s team with their professional excellence in meeting our pledge’, said MTR Projects Director T C Chew.
The work includes upgrading the Ma On Shan Line and West Rail Line to enable automatic train operation. The first stage of SCL, due to be completed in 2018, will connect the West Rail line at Hong Hum with the Ma On Shan line at Tai Wai.
The second phase would extend the East Rail line by 6 km from Hung Hom to Wan Chai North and Admiralty on Hong Kong Island in 2020. In December 2012 MTR announced that it had awarded Siemens a HK$850m contract for installation of CBTC on this section.
