PORTUGAL: Infraestruturas de Portugal has announced the timetable for electrifying at 25 kV 50 Hz the 46 km Tunes – Lagos and 56 km Faro – Vila Real de Santo António routes in the Algarve as part of its 2020 investment programme.

Following design and environmental impact studies, a contract to design and build a new traction substation for the Faro — Vila Real de Santo António route and upgrade the existing substation at Tunes would go out to tender in the third quarter of 2017.

Contracts to undertake the electrification work itself would go out to tender in the third quarter of 2018, with work expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2020. A budget of €14m has been set for the Tunes – Lagos section and €18m for Faro – Vila Real de Santo António.

The project would also include modifications to signalling and telecommunications equipment at a cost of €1∙6m.
