USA: San Diego Association of Governments has selected HDR in partnership with Mott MacDonald and SMEs to undertake environmental clearance and advanced conceptual engineering for a project to replace a section of coastal railway by a new inland alignment.
The LOSSAN Rail Realignment Project would bypass 8 km of single track on the Los Angeles – San Diego corridor through Del Mar, which is vulnerable to erosion and rising sea levels. The double-track inland alignment would be designed for 175 km/h running, improving safety, reliability and capacity. Completion is envisaged by 2035.
‘This project is all about protecting a critical rail corridor and an economic lifeline for our region’, said HDR Project Manager Lorenzo Garrido on October 18. ‘Relocating the tracks from the coastal bluffs will be a lasting benefit for future generations.’
