EUROPE: Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel has awarded Colas Rail two contracts for maintenance and renewal of the 200 km of track at its two terminals and in the tunnel.
One contract covers routine maintenance and is worth €2·5m over three years, with an option for a further two years.
The second contract is worth €7·9m and covers rail and fastening renewals in the tunnel bores. The work will be undertaken overnight and at weekends in three to four months periods every year for three years, with about 60 people mobilised each night.
Colas Rail carried out its first work in the Channel Tunnel in 2009, and subsequently signed an initial five-year maintenance contract in November 2014.
‘These contracts are demanding for our teams since they have to work on a 24/7 basis, with an obligation to intervene within two hours in the event of a problem’, said Grégory Petit, manager of Voie ITE Nord Colas Rail, on March 17.
