UKRAINE: National railway UZ has approved a five-year programme of electrification for 2011-16 covering 1562 km. At present 9877 km of the network is electrified, or 44% of total route length.

The plan is costed at 173bn hryvnia and includes both 3 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC electrification. It will affect five of UZ’s six regional railways: Donetsk, Dniepr, South Western, Southern and Odessa.

As the first stage of the scheme, on August 22 UZ ceremonially completed modernisation and 25 kV electrification of the 101 km Fastiv – Zhytomyr line on the South Western Railway west of Kyiv, enabling the introduction of a faster Zhytomyr – Kiev service operated by EMUs with improved passenger comfort.l
