USA: New Jersey transport agency NJ Transit has awarded a design and preliminary engineering contract worth $160·2m to WSP USA to develop the Route 440 extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail network.

The 1·1 km extension would take the existing Jersey City branch of HBLR from West Side Avenue on an elevated alignment over a trunk road to a terminus at Bayfront-Route 440, where substantial residential and commercial development is being taken forward.

HBLR is a 33 km network linking North Bergen with Jersey City and Bayonne. It provides interchange in Hoboken with commuter rail, the PATH metro and ferry services to New York City.
