HUNGARY: A consortium of Strabag Rail (66%) and a local partner V-Híd has been awarded a €364m contract to double-track and renew the 30 km line between Békéscsaba and Lőkösháza at the Romanian border on the route to Arad.

Announcing the contract on June 22, Strabag Chief Executive CEO Thomas Birtel said the 33-month project would modernise an important link in the Trans-European Network, improving connections to the Black Sea ports.

The work will increase the maximum speed on the route from 100 to 160 km/h, provide more capacity and allow higher axleloads. Strabag’s role will include track, electrification and signalling works, and the modernisation of Szabadkígyós, Kétegyháza and Lőkösháza stations to improve accessibility and provide park and ride facilities.
