Laka Balaton train

HUNGARY: Electric services have been launched on the 55 km Szabadbattyán – Balatonfüred section of the railway around the north side of Lake Balaton, following the completion of a HF24bn modernisation and electrification programme.

The journey time from Balatonfüred to Budapest has been reduced by up to 20 min, helped by the elimination of the need to change locomotives in Székesfehérvár. The stations at Polgárdi, Balatonkenese, Balatonfűzfő and Alsóörs have also been modernised.

The government has given the go-ahead for electrification of the next 77 km from Balatonfüred to Tapolca and Keszthely, as well as the 28 km Tapolca – Ukk line.
