HUNGARY: The EU has provided €193m from the Cohesion Fund to cover 85% of the cost of the recently-completed modernisation of the 123 km line around the south side of Lake Balaton between Székesfehérvár and Keszthely (RG 7.17 p40).

Modernisation of the entire route from Budapest to Keszthely was undertaken in two stages, with the latest investment focused on the 53 km between Szántód-Kőröshegy and Balatonszentgyörgy. As part of the project, 38 road and 124 pedestrian crossings have been modernised, and 13 new pedestrian crossings installed.

‘By enhancing transport infrastructure, this project will offer better services to thousands of travellers using the railway line every day’, said Commissioner for Regional policy Corina Crețu on July 20. ‘This will bring many advantages for the economy and tourism in the Balaton region.
