LUXEMBOURG: The first section of the city of Luxembourg’s 16 km tramway opened for public service on December 10, with free travel offered until the end of January.
The starter section covers 8 km between Luxexpo and Pafendall-Rout Bréck in the Kirchberg district, serving six intermediate stops. The full route is expected to open in 2021 and would link Luxembourg Airport with Cloche d’Or, serving the principal main line station.
CAF has supplied a fleet of 21 Urbos low-floor cars to project promoter Luxtram. A section of the route between Cloche d’Or and Gare Centrale will be designed for catenary-free operation, with grond-level equipment recharging onboard supercapacitors while passengers board and alight at stops.
Luxtram will operate trams every 6 min during the day on weekdays and every 10 min on Saturdays and at 15 min intervals on Sundays.
