SLOVAKIA: Infrastructure manager Železnice Slovenskej Republiky has awarded a contract to roll out GSM-R to support ETCS Level 2 on its 329 km main line linking Varín east of Žilina to Košice and Čierna nad Tisou on the Ukrainian border.
The €40m turnkey contract has been awarded to a consortium led by Kontron Transportation with AŽD Praha and Elektrizace železnic Praha. The consortium will develop, design, integrate and implement the GSM-R infrastructure, including transmission facilities, GSM-R terminals, base stations, electronic security systems and optic fibres.
The project is being financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility. Work is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023 and take approximately two years to complete.
GSM-R has already been deployed on the first part of ZSR’s Bratislava – Košice corridor, covering the section from the capital to Žilina and Čadca on the Czech border.
