USA: The first of four underbridges has been built in 51 h as part of a $25·7m project to enable pedestrians to cross legally and safely the San Diego - Los Angeles - San Luis Obispo rail corridor in Encinitas, California. The LOSSAN corridor carries more than 50 passenger and freight trains a day.

Construction of the $5·9m bridge at Santa Fe Drive continued around the clock from 00.00 on September 8 until 03.00 on September 10.

San Diego Association of Governments is project manager, with TY Lin as design engineer, Flatiron as general contractor and Caltrop responsible for construction management. The scope of the project includes pedestrian approaches, beautification works, road crossing improvements and utility relocations.
