MALAYSIA: The first of 14 Innovia Metro 300 trainsets ordered as part of the project to extend Kuala Lumpur’s Kelana Jaya light metro line was unveiled by Bombardier Transportation and its local partner Hartasuma on January 18.
Bombardier said the driverless trainsets are being ‘designed, constructed and tested’ at its Centre of Competence for Mass Transit Systems at Kingston in Canada. Malaysian rolling stock maintenance company Hartasuma is responsible for interior fit-out at its plant in Westport near Kuala Lumpur, including installing the onboard security and communications systems.
The first four-car train is currently nearing completion in Westport, with deliveries to operator Rapid Rail scheduled to start in mid-2016. Each train will need to complete 2 000 km without a major failure before entering revenue service when the 17 km Kelana Jaya Line extension from Kelana Jaya to Putra Heights opens on June 30.
‘We hope the introduction of the new trains will further encourage more people to use public transport and support the government's aspiration to increase the public transport modal share’, said Ismail Adam, Chairman of Kuala Lumpur transport agency Prasarana.
