CHINA: A pig roast and 'energetic hip-hop dancing' by youth groups accompanied the groundbreaking ceremony for Hong Kong MTR's Kwun Tong Line extension on July 25.

Scheduled to open in 2015, the 2·6 km extension will run in tunnel from Yau Ma Tei to serve two new stations at Ho Man Tin and Whampoa. Ho Man Tin will provide an interchange with the Shatin to Central Link.

'The extension of the MTR Kwun Tong Line will link up Kowloon City District with the rest of Hong Kong which goes a long way to supporting the government's policy of having railways as the backbone of public transport', said Lau Ka-keung, Director of Highways, at the groundbreaking event. 'It will also enhance transport efficiency, bringing about considerable transport, economic, social and environmental benefits not only to Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong Districts, but also to Hong Kong as a whole.'
