SPAIN: The junta of Andalucía has awarded CAF a €32·5m contract to supply six trams for the future tramway in Alcalá de Guadaíra, to the east of Sevilla.
The contract announced by the manufacturer on March 20 includes the supply of spare parts and two years of maintenance.
Construction of the 12·5 km tramway began in 2007 but work was repeatedly suspended, most recently in 2018. The project was revived in 2019 following an intervention by the European Commission, with work undertaken to repair assets which had been repeatedly vandalised.
The line will connect with the Sevilla light rail network at Pablo de Olavide. Services will run up to every 9 min, with five trams required for the daily service.
‘The Alcalá tramway has not only been resumed but is moving forward decisively to complete all the civil works’, said Marifrán Carazo, Minister for Regional Development & Housing at the regional authority. She said further tenders would be called this year with a total value of €176m, including the tram order.
