SPAIN: Surveys have begun ahead of a call for tenders for construction of an extension to Granada’s light rail line, and an order for additional trams has been confirmed.
Ayesa and Pontem Engineering Services are undertaking geotechnical surveys for the 4·6 km, six-stop southern extension between Armilla, Churriana de la Vega and Las Gabias, which is to be built with €108m of EU co-financing.
Construction is expected to start in spring 2023 for opening in 2026.
Meanwhile, sole bidder CAF has been formally awarded a contract to supply eight more trams, similar to the 15 already in service. These will have a maximum speed of 70 km/h and a capacity of 221 passengers.
The additional vehicles are needed for the extension and to provide an increase in capacity, with trams to operate in pairs at peak times.
