ITALY: Modernisation and extension of Roma’s Termini – Giardinetti light rail lineincluding rebuilding from narrow to standard gauge is set to begin next year, with the route to be branded as Line G.
The project includes three elements. The first is the complete modernisation of the existing 9 km Termini – Giardinetti line, which will be rebuilt from 950 mm to 1 435 mm gauge. Revenue services are currently only running between Termini and the metro Line C interchange at Parco di Centocelle.
The second is the construction of a 3·6 km extension from Giardinetti to Tor Vergata to serve universities and hospitals.
The third element will be the procurement of 22 light rail vehicles.
The total cost is put at €214m, with completion planned by 2025.
In the longer term a further 4 km extension from Tor Vergata to a future park-and-ride site is also proposed.
