RUSSIA: The roll-out of an automatic route-setting system on the Moscow tram network has begun with the first test deployment near the Kursk railway station.
Equipment fitted to a Vityaz low-floor trams transmits the required route to the turnout, which changes automatically with the driver able to observe the setting on a screen in the cab.
‘We will gradually upgrade all tram turnouts in Moscow’, said the city’s Department of Transport. ‘In addition to the control system, we plan to upgrade their design. This way, the driver will not be distracted from the road, everything happens automatically. Trams will go faster and trips will become even safer. We use advanced Russian-made technologies, which have never been used before in transport.’
