ESTONIA: Tallinn municipality has approved the route for a planned tram line connecting the airport, the future Rail Baltica station in Ülemiste and the old port area.

The route will use existing tracks from Ülemiste to Gonsiori, and then turn onto Laikmaa and pass through Hobujaama to the port and the city hall, before joining an existing route to the west.

Detailed design is to start in 2021, with construction getting underway in 2022 for opening towards the end of 2023.

The cost is estimated at €15m to €20m, with funding sources expected to include a contribution from the Rail Baltica project.

Tallinn is also undertaking a project to raise the commercial speed of trams, with measures including tram priority at road junctions.
