SPAIN: Catalunya regional rail operator FGC has awarded Ayesa Ingeniería y Arquitectura a 15-month, €1·6m contract to produce specifications for the proposed Tramvia del Camp de Tarragona light rail line, including evaluation of options for catenary-free electrification.
The project would involve the construction of 14·6 km of 1 435 mm gauge tramway in Cambrils, Salou and Vila-seca, mostly on existing former railway alignments.
The overall cost is estimated at €150m, including the control centre, depot and trams.
A second phase would include links from Tarragona to Reus and Vila-seca.
The aim is to increase the modal share of public transport in the Tarragona district from 18% to 25% by offering fast, interurban connections between residential and employment areas, with annual ridership on the proposed tramway estimated at 9 million.
