Poznan tram extension opening (2)

POLAND: The latest phase of a tramway extension along ul Naramowice in the north of Poznań has opened for revenue service, following an opening ceremony on April 23 which included a parade of historic trams.

Initially served by route 10, the double-track extension starts at the Wilczak loop and runs for 3 km. It adds seven stops including the terminus at ul Błażeja, which has been built as a stub with provision for a future extension to Umultowo.

Construction was undertaken by Turkish contractor Gülermak under a 400m złoty contract awarded in 2018, with work getting underway in late May 2020. An initial the section to Włodarska was opened in August 2021 and another stop at Lechicka/Naramowicka was added in October 2021. Testing running through to Błażeja began in March.

As there is no turning loop at the new terminus, the line can only be worked by double-ended trams. Route 3 is expected to be extended to Błażeja in the near future.
