First section opened in 1901 between Kumagaya and Yorii, 60 km northwest of Tokyo. The line now extends east from Kumagaya to connect with the Tobu Isesaki Line at Hanyu, and west to Mitsumine-guchi, serving the Nagatoro gorge and Chichibu mountains. Kumagaya and Yorii provide interchange to JR East.
