The railway linking Libreville with Booué and Franceville was built to tap manganese deposits formerly shipped by the Comilog Railway (now part of the Congo-Ocean Railway) for export through Congo. The 185 km between Owendo and N’Djole was opened in 1978 and the remainder in stages through to 1986.
