Established as an independent entity in 1991 following break-up of the former Soviet Railways (SZD) organisation, the railway became a state-controlled joint stock company in 1994. It comprises the former Central Asian Railway division of SZD. A 75 km line into Afghanistan opened in 2011, initially being operated by UTY.
