INDIA: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has unveiled the design of the trainsets which Alstom is to supply for Agra metro Line 1.
In July 2020 state operator Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corp awarded Bombardier Transportation — now Alstom — a €245m combined contract to supply 28 three-car trainsets for Agra and 39 to Kanpur along with Cityflo 650 communications-based train control. The package includes options for a further 51 cars.
UPMRC decided to combine the rolling stock and signalling contracts with the aim of replicating the rapid timescale for implementation of Lucknow metro Phase 1A, which it described as the fastest metro project implementation in India at the time. Delivery deadline for the first train was set at 64 weeks, but the first unit for Kanpur was handed over in September 2021, just 60 weeks after the contract award.
The stainless steel bodied Movia trainsets are being designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Hyderabad, and will be manufactured at the factory at Savli in Gujarat, meeting ‘Make in India’ requirements. The signalling is being developed in Gurgaon.
The 750 V DC third rail trainsets have Flexx metro bogies and Mitrac traction equipment; they are designed to operate at 80 km/h, with a maximum speed of 90 km/h. The interiors feature a modern passenger information system, areas for passengers with reduced mobility and air-conditioning which adjusts to the passenger loading by measuring CO2 levels inside the vehicles.
Agra metro Line 1 will run for 14·0 km from Sikandra to Taj East Gate with six elevated and seven underground stations serving destinations including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Raja Ki Mandi station and the medical college. Work is already well advanced on the 6 km priority section between Taj East Gate and Jama Masjid. The 15·4 km second line will run from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar, serving 14 elevated stations.
