UK: The first of 52 automated light metro trainsets which CAF is supplying for London’s Docklands Light Railway was unveiled at Beckton depot on February 8.
The 750 V DC third-rail driverless trainsets are expected to enter service from between 2024 and 2026.
The five-car trainsets have wide walk-through gangways, real-time audio and visual passenger information, air-conditioning and mobile device charging points. There are three multi-purpose areas for pushchairs, bicycles and luggage, and three dedicated wheelchair spaces.
The trains also feature an updated seat fabric branded ‘Poplar’.
Deliverability, expertise and value
In May 2017 Transport for London invited expressions of interest in a contract to supply and support 43 trainsets with options for up to 34 more. Alstom Transport, Bombardier Transportation, CAF and a consortium of Siemens and Stadler subsequently prequalified to bid.
Procurement focused on deliverability, technical expertise and value for money, and TfL named CAF the winner of the contract in June 2019.
TfL has ordered 33 trainsets to replace the DLR’s oldest rolling stock which is now more than 30 years old and coming to the end of its design life, as well as 21 sets to boost capacity; 11 of these have been funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities to support the development of new homes, particularly in the Royal Docks area.
