DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply eight three-car Metropolis trainsets to increase capacity on Santo Domingo Metro Line 1.

The order is being financed by French development agency AFD.

Line 1 serves 16 stations on a 14∙5 km north–south route, and is currently operated with a fleet of 25 Alstom Metropolis trains. Alstom has also supplied 21 trains for Line 2.

The additional trainsets will be able to operate in multiple with each other and the current fleet, allowing capacity to be adapted to demand with trains having six cars in the peaks and three at off-peak times.

The new cars will be largely similar to the existing ones, with technical enhancements including LED lighting, wi-fi and improvements to the passenger information, train control and diagnostic systems.

The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s plant at Santa Perpètua near Barcelona, with the first two to be delivered within 18 months.
