CHINA: The second phase of Xi’an Metro Line 6 has opened, running through the city centre from Xibeigongyedaxue (NW Polytechnical University) and then east to Fangzhicheng.
The 15·6 km first phase of Line 6 running southwest from Xibeigongyedaxue to Xi’an International Medical Centre with 13 stations had been inaugurated on December 26 2020.
The second phase was inaugurated on December 29 2022. Under construction since January 2017, it adds a further 19·5 km and 17 stations. There are five interchanges with other routes, including connections to lines 1 and 9 at Fangzhicheng.
A two-station southern extension to Xi’an Nan is due to be opened during 2023; the timing is to be co-ordinated with the modernisation of the China Railways station. This will bring the line to a total length of 35·1 km with 30 stations.
Line 6 is operated by a fleet of six-car Type B trainsets supplied by CRRC Dalian, which are designed for 80 km/h operation. The first 25 trains were supplied for the first phase, with another 28 being delivered for opening of the second phase.
