ITALY: Three CAF trams entered service in Cagliari on April 21 as part of the 950 mm gauge network’s 10th anniversary celebrations, which included a day of free travel.
Sardinia transport authority ARST ordered the vehicles in 2013, and the first arrived in Cagliari in November 2016. The five-section trams are 33 m long with capacity for 237 passengers. They augment the fleet of six Škoda 06T vehicles.
Work on the long-planned light rail extension from Piazza Repubblica to the main railway station is expected to begin next year, said regional councillor for transport Carlo Careddu. ARST expects the 2·5 km alignment will cost just over €20m to build.
