SINGAPORE: The first Thomson-East Coast Line train has arrived at Mandai Depot near the northern end of the line after being unloaded at Jurong Port.
Land Transport Authority ordered 91 four-car driverless trainsets from a consortium of Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang in 2014 under a S$749m contract. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is responsible for the overall train design, while CSR Qingdao Sifang is producing the carbodies and undertaking final assembly.
Running from Woodlands in the north to Sungai Bedok in the east, the 43 km L-shaped route serving 31 stations is expected to open in phases between 2019 and 2024. SMRT won the initial nine-year contract to operate and maintain the line last year.
