GERMANY: Magdeburg’s municipal transport operator MVB has acquired a Unimog 423 road-rail rescue vehicle for use on the city’s tram network.
Ordered to replace a predecessor dating from 1992, the vehicle carries tools and re-railing equipment, and it is capable of hauling a failed tram back to the depot.
The wheelbase has been extended to 4 500 mm to provide space for the double cabin with space for four staff, and the box body has been produced by Gmeinder Lokomotiven using fibreglass to save weight and thus increase the load capacity.
Zagro designed the rail guidance system which can cope with the tramway’s rail profile and curves down to 17 m. Each axle has a camera and lighting for safe night operation.
