USA: San Diego Metropolitan Transit System has awarded Siemens a contract to supply a further 45 light rail vehicles from late 2018.
Announcing the contract on November 1, Siemens said the low-floor S70 LRVs would be built at its Sacramento plant. They will feature a redesigned centre section to improve passenger flow and provide greater wheelchair accessibility and more space for bicycles.
MTS plans to use 36 of the LRVs on the 17·6 km Mid-Coast Trolley extension of the Blue Line which is under construction for opening in 2021, and nine to increase frequencies on the existing network.
Siemens said MTS has now ordered a total of 244 LRVs from it since 1981, making MTS the supplier’s largest US light rail customer.
