INDIA’S Konkan Railway is carrying out trials of Raksha Kavach on-board and lineside anti-collision devices over its 760route-km network, covering 53 stations and 107 level crossings of which 27 are unstaffed.

The ACDs are linked through intelligent real-time networks which detect and exchange data about which track a train is on, the status of level crossings, train integrity and track occupation. This provides a back-up overlaid on the railway’s existing safety systems and procedures. If human error, conflicting moves or other potentially dangerous situations are detected, the ACD can initiate automatic braking.

Since August, 85 lineside radio repeaters and 96 tunnel repeaters have been installed to increase the 3 km range of each ACD, providing alerts of any problems to the crews of 89 locomotives. Soil inclinometers provide warnings of landslips at 169 locations.
