THE SAFETY of trains crossing a major waterway in the western USA is being enhanced with the deployment of a $380 000 Collision Alert Monitoring & Impact Analysis system developed by Florida-based Duos Technologies.
A bank of vibration and acceleration sensors detects any impact along the bridge, while a series of high-definition cameras record the event as it happens. Alarm data is automatically coupled to the video images and dispatched to control centres.
'Rail operators typically suffer substantial losses from hit-and-run activity by maritime vessels that strike bridge structures, often with enough force to shift rail tracks out of alignment', said Duos Technologies Chief Executive Gianni B Arcaini. 'Our system acts as a constant guardian of such structures, immediately alerting the rail operator to prevent significant damage, and documenting actual events for prosecution of the perpetrator.'
