FINNISH rolling stock builder Talgo Oy has decided to build a four-car prototype to demonstrate its innovative Talgo 22 double-deck EMU design. The move increases the total investment in the development project to around €8m, partially funded by the Finnish National Technology Agency (Teknes).
Proposed two years ago for the Zürich S-Bahn fleet (RG 11.02 p683), the Talgo 22 concept is the first double-deck design to provide inter-car gangways on both levels. According to Managing Director Tapani Tapaninaho, this offers better passenger circulation within the train and will improve safety in the event of an incident. Talgo Oy is hoping to win orders for 100 new EMUs to be used on Helsinki suburban services.
Work has started on the demonstrator, which is due to begin running in June 2005. It will be formed of two centre trailers and two driving power cars, but will not be fitted with traction equipment. Product Manager Jouni Tyni says the train will be hauled by a locomotive during a programme of trials to verify running performance.
