MARKING the culmination of two decades of expansion, Grenoble inaugurated Line D of its light rail network on October 6.
The 2·6 km line serving four new stations is effectively a branch of Line C, with trams running from the interchange with Line B at Les Taillées to a junction at Neyrpic-Belledonne, where it diverges from Line C to pass through the commune of Saint-Martin-d'Hères to a terminus at Etienne Grappe.
The €40m project means transport authority SMTC has spent €435m since 2000 on light rail extensions, of which €23m was state grant. The authority hopes to add another 15 km by 2012.
